FLOWER,
DRUM AND SONGS: MORE THAN A MUSICAL |
November
8,
2009 |
|
This
past summer, the Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre produced
Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical FLOWER DRUM
SONG, which recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
Originally produced in 1958, it was the first Broadway
musical to
feature an entire cast of American Asian characters.
This documentary follows the process of staging such
a large all Asian production from its early casting calls
to its opening night performance. As the audience watches
the production take shape, interviews with main characters
address many of the predominant issues faced by artists
of Asian heritage stuffling to break through the stereotypes
of mainstream media that have and have not changed from
the 1950's.
The filmmaker will be in attendance.

The Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre presents
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s FLOWER DRUM SONG
WATERFRONT THEATRE, GRANVILLE ISLAND
May 28 – June 14, 2009
• Nominated for 6 Tony Awards including Best Musical
The generation gap is given the Rodgers & Hammerstein
treatment in this colourful approach to the age-old conflict.
In San Francisco’s Chinatown of the late ‘50s,
nightclub owner Sammy Fong’s traditional family has
ordered him a picture-bride from China, hoping to end his
pursuit of an enticing dancer. Mei Li arrives, shy and
at sea in a world she doesn’t understand, and it’s
clear that she’s the wrong gal for the totally assimilated
Sammy. However, she may be just the ticket for Sammy’s
buddy, whose traditionalist father is fighting a losing
battle with his kids against rock ‘n’ roll,
baseball, sports cars and the typical trappings of the
modern American life-style. Full of intrigue and comedic
moments, through song and dance, the story of families,
friendships, and romance are conveyed in this timeless
Asian American musical.

Lannette's
a cappella quintet, VERVE Collective, is happy to be
putting on a public show at the very cool Our Town
Café.
In conjunction with Kate Polsky's 2-night Birthday
Bash (Kate is the
founder of VERVE Collective), VERVE will be singing
a set on the first night of festivities. Kate will be
opening
the evening at 7:30pm with some original music, then
VERVE Collective will be on at 8:30pm.
While VERVE has been performing in some very public
venues, this is the first publicly accessible show
they have
planned in a long time. Lannette is excited to be able
to share her group's music with you and hopes you are
able to make it out. Come for a listen, a coffee, something
stronger, some nibbles or a meal. It will also be a
great chance to catch up with VERVE afterwards! Featuring:
Lannette New, Kate Polsky, Joel Smith, Peter Brasso,
and Gerry Parsons.
